What Happened to Lewis Hamilton?

Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected move to Ferrari last year was one of the most impactful and craziest moves the sport has seen in a long time. Everyone remembers where they were on February 1st, 2024. Leaving Mercedes, Hamilton was ready to put the last few struggling years behind him. The Formula 1 world eagerly awaited his Ferrari debut, curious as to how the world champion would handle the rebuilding team.

Fast forward to the 2025 season, and things are not going as either Ferrari or Hamilton planned. By mid-season, Hamilton had yet to secure a podium, which raised significant concerns. The Scuderia driver was determined to bounce back and turn things around for the Hungarian Grand Prix, aiming for a podium finish.

Unfortunately, those hopes were dashed when he qualified 12th on Saturday, while teammate Charles Leclerc had a brilliant drive, qualifying on pole. On Sunday, Leclerc ended in fourth, and Hamilton ended back in 12th. The seven-time world champion had a few choice words for his driving, causing some fans to speculate over whether he was considering leaving Ferrari early. In an interview with Sky Sports F1 after qualifying on Saturday, Hamilton said, “The team have no problem. You’ve seen the car’s on pole. So they probably need to change drivers.” This, coming from someone so confident at the beginning of the season to wear the red and lead the Tifosi, is honestly just disheartening.

Lewis Hamilton is known for resilience, and he would be nowhere near as successful as he is today without it, which makes a lot of people raise eyebrows over his self-critical comments. While it’s easy to speculate from the outside, I’m not in the know of Hamilton’s inner circle- he may well have been expressing frustration in the heat of the moment. Going into Summer break, all drivers are taking well-deserved time off, and we can only hope Hamilton will bounce back and join Leclerc in fights for podiums.
